Community Notice - QLD ELECTION COMMITMENTS

Back

Council has advocated strongly for our priorities in the lead up to the Queensland elections tomorrow. Council’s three priorities are:

1.    Private home ownership.
2.    Investment in our Palm Island Tourism Master Plan.
3.    Economic development broadly and specifically through the Palm Island Economic Development Corporation.

Council was appreciative of the Miles Labour Government taking our private home ownership proposal to Cabinet on 19 August 2024, and while we welcomed the endorsement of our proposal by Cabinet, we were disappointed that they couldn’t find a way to implement it immediately. The Katter Australia Party, the Greens and the LNP have all made public their support for our private home ownership proposal, with the LNP committing to early implementation should they win the election.

Council developed our Palm Island Tourism Master Plan through the second half of 2023. We submitted a request to government for $7m in funding in December 2023 and have not had a reply to our request. We have sought similar support from other parties, and very much welcome the LNP’s commitment of $4.9m towards our Plan. This funding will see the construction of 70kms of walking trails on Island and an additional public toilet on the foreshore as part of Indigenous Art and Cultural Installation. The construction of the walking trails will be done in partnership with the Manbarra Rangers and support local jobs and future business development.

Council enjoys support from the Commonwealth and State Government for our broad economic development ambitions. At the Queensland Government level, the LNP have committed substantial funds to drive growth and prosperity over coming years through the Palm Island Economic Development Corporation.
